Guppy and Hannibal spent a fair amount of time working on Sunshine yesterday, and she is currently resting in one of the beds.

She could probably do with some gentle company.

Sunshine awake

Sunshine is often asleep, but sometimes she meanders back towards wakefulness, to read or gaze out the nearby window. Much of her energy is focused on healing, and she knows better than try to overtax herself, however much she'd rather not be stuck in the infirmary.

She would welcome visitors. The painkillers she is on are... quite nice.

"Rae? What's...oh." Gavroche stops abruptly, blinking at the woman in the bed, who is not the little girl he's got quite fond of, which is who he was expecting to see. "Hello."

Sunshine has been gazing out the window at the summer landscape, thinking and trying not to think. When someone comes in, though, she looks over at the person in the door.

"Hello," she says, offering a slightly puzzled smile. Rae doesn't recognize him.

"Gavroche", he introduces himself. "I think either I was looking for a different Rae or it's a long time since you've seen me."

Joshua saw the note on the board, and ran home for a while, returning with a plateful of wonderful-smelling brownies. He peeks in the door with a smile. "Rae?"

Rae, who had possibly been drifting off again (those painkillers are fantastic), blinks her eyes open and glances towards the door.

She smiles, recognizing Joshua. "Hey you."

Joshua walks over and pulls up a chair, the brownies in his lap. "I saw the note, and thought I'd come and see how you're doing. I, er, well, I brought some brownies."

'Rae.'

The voice is familiar, and tinged with relief, though he does try to cover it.

It doesn't work.

He settles on the edge of her bed, light as a feather, careful not to jostle her. One hand comes up and brushes a hair from her forehead, and he bends to place a kiss on her brow.

Rae is drowsy, not fully awake, when he appears. The painkillers may have left her mind a fuzzy and muted place, but she can't stop herself stiffening at the sudden-vampire-leaning-into-her-personal-space. Even though she recognizes him, she lifts her open left hand unconsciously against his chest as though she could ward him off. Especially after last night, sudden - even if familiar - vampirage has her on-edge.

Vampirage? Is that even a word? She can't be sure. Maybe vam-peerage? He is of noble lineage, after all.

Some part of her drowsy mind is aware that she's rambling. If not out-loud. Well, even that's up to debate, isn't it?

He takes her hand and lays it over his still heart, covering it with his own.



He trusts her, completely.


'Shh.' He laughs, under his breath, pulling back to smile at her. 'The medicine seems to be working. Would you like me to come back later?'

His hand still covers hers on his chest.

Howard has never been here. It's a fairly nice space, certainly better than the cramped medical facilities back in the UK, and even more modern than most hospitals he knows.

But he's not here to study the room, is he?

"Mmh?" Rae murmurs, drifting back up towards wakefulness from the doze she'd fallen into. "Howard? Oh... hey there."

She's not at her best, but she'll offer him a drowsy smile.

"I heard something happened, and I just wanted to come and visit." She looks tired more than anything else. Whatever the doctors did here, it seems to be effective enough. "I would ask how you are feeling, but that seems to be self evident."

Steve sits at Rae's beside and folds his hands together. He knows it can be a little ... unsettling to know that someone is watching you sleep. Just a few minutes, and if she wakes up, good--if not, he'll come back later.

Sunshine soon stirs. The painkillers, though leaving her mind in a drowsy, muddled state, never seem to let her do more than doze when she drifts off. Still, she has slept more in the past twenty-four hours than she has done in much of the previous week. The dreams brought by the medicines are odd, but are not the nightmares that usually plague her rest.

When her bleary eyes blink open and notice the person sitting next to her, she stiffens slightly. It's automatic, but gone just as quickly as it came, when she notices who it is.

"Oh, hey you," she offers Steve a slight smile.

The next time she hovers on the brink of waking, she'll likely feel the warmth of sunbeams bathing her from the left, the right, above. Jars placed on tables and hanging from macramé nets surround her in a cocoon woven of light.

And it's on the outside of the blades of sunlight that a boy sits--curled up over a book with his knees tucked to his chest, squinting. His face is cast in half-shadows, but his glasses glint as he turns the page.

Though she doesn't wake immediately, there is a change to her as the jars of sunlight are added. The faint tension that had hidden on her face is eased. Her breathing deepens, slows, eases.

And when she does eventually wake, it's a gradual, natural, and easy wakening of that sort that follows a deep, restorative sleep.

But someone has brought sunlight into the infirmary, and she has difficulty seeing past it.

"Wh...?" she murmurs, curious and still comfortably drowsy.

There's a soft jingle of bells and then a smell of cinnamon. The Fool shuffles in carefully holding a small covered plate and gives her a small smile.

"I heard you got hurt."

Sunshine is warm from blankets and drowsy with some really top-notch painkillers. She is feeling very... fuzzy around the mental edges.

"Yeah, that's what they tell me, too," she answers with a vague, slightly wry smile. "Those aren't going to turn me into a kitten, are they?"

Yeah, she found out about Autor's experience.

Finvarra has left a small bunch of yellow Michaelmas daisies, tied with one of their fellows, on Rae's bedside table. For a creature much more accustomed to shadows and half-light, he tolerates the harshly-lit infirmary well enough to see her.

"Come away, O human child," he says, half-murmur and half-sigh and mostly inaudible. "What did you do to yourself, Raven?"

Sunshine hears his voice, faintly, as she drifts in the space between dreaming and awake. Turning her head, she gazes at the faerie king, her friend. Rae's smile is drowsily wry, but true, as she offers him her hand.

She stirred up trouble, Finvarra, knowing full well that's what she was doing and that's what she would get.

Dr. Hannibal Lecter is not exactly a visitor, but there quite often when she wakes up, and ready to pay attention, should she need anything beyond the scope of the Work Experience Waitrat who helps in the infirmary.

There have been brownies, a small pie shared between friends, and a vase of bright sunflowers that soak in the light pouring from the sunlight-jars just as much as Rae herself.

Having visitors has been a lovely distraction between her many naps. Sunshine feels like she's slept more in the last twenty-four hours than she had in the previous week. She might even be right about that.

But Sunshine is not used to being kept in one place, and is beginning to fidget from time to time.

"Afternoon, Dr. Lecter," she greets him with a slight smile on one of the occasions when he is there and she is awake.

Tommy lightly knocks on the door as he pokes his head into the room.

She's awake! Awake is good. Drugs that make being awake not painful is good, too!

"Hey, sweetie," he greets her, stepping inside. "How're you doin'?" His tone is low and heavy with concern, yet still trying to be upbeat.

"Heyyyyy," says the girl in the bed with all the bandages. At least she's clean! She wasn't when she arrived last night. She's also not in pain, which is another big improvement. "I'm doing... well, I'm drifting along all right. How've you been, Tommy?"
