(no subject)

Guppy and Hannibal spent a fair amount of time working on Sunshine yesterday, and she is currently resting in one of the beds.

She could probably do with some gentle company.

Steve wrinkles his nose in sympathy. "Ugh. That would put anybody off baking."

"Yeah," she says, emphatically.

"It seems kind of... silly, in a way, considering everything," Rae murmurs. "I'm really very squeamish when it comes to things in the kitchen. Even mundane, ground-up hamburger meat gives me the chills. And I wasn't expecting for something in the fridge to be staring back at me."

She tries her best to keep her life as a baker separate from the rest of it. From the part of her life that leaves her stuck in an infirmary with a hodgepodge of injuries ranging from a variety of lacerations to a concussion, broken ribs, and a bruised lung.

"Well, if a kitchen is a safe place for you, something that ... disturbing would be really hard to handle. I'd think so, anyway."

"It really was," Rae nods. The kitchen has always been her place. Away from people, away from questions. The acts of mixing and kneading and baking a kind of therapeutic meditation.

"Not sure what I'm going to do in the coming weeks. I'm not sure how long it'll take me to heal from all this."

"Six weeks for broken bones," Steve says. "Unless they have some sort of advanced doodad that will speed up your healing, or if there's a god around to do it.

"...you know, I think Apollo might even like you. Sunshine and everything."

Rae can't help but wince at the thought of six weeks having to pass before she's back to normal. Or will things still be weird for a bit past that? She needs to know when she can go back.

Back to the fight.

"I met an Apollo here, once. A couple of years ago, now - he was doing a poetry-themed Happy Hour."

"If it's the god Apollo, he can do healing. He healed Orpheus when someone broke his collar bone.

"But I don't know him well enough to, I don't know, summon him or whatever you do."

"I don't, either," she replies. "I just met him the once."

"Remembered enough high-school stuff about poetry to offer a line in dactylic hexameter for a free drink, but that's about it," she says, wry.

"Then I'll... have to find something I can do in the meantime, I guess," Rae says, with a belatedly aborted shrug. She's going to have to remind herself that her broken collarbone doesn't appreciate that.

"Can I bring some books from the library?"

"Short of outright healing by some god or another, new reading materials would be a godsend," Rae's smile may be somewhat wry, but it's sincere. "I've already read through all the magazines here - the ones in a language I can read, at least - twice each."
thekidfrombrooklyn: (smile - friendly)

"I'm pretty picky about my non-fiction," she admits.

Politics and most biographies bore her to tears, and anything claiming to be non-fiction about Others, she'll assume to be horribly biased.

"But most fiction - science-fiction or fantasy especially - should be pretty safe. Barring... uh... supernatural romance," Rae adds with a grimace.

Sparkly vampires.

"It's not..." she debates how to say this, looking uncomfortable.

"There are worlds out there where it's okay to publish that kind of stuff, because they don't actually have vampires."

"Mine isn't one of those worlds. There.. isn't much that's a worse taboo, you know?"

Half the population of the world was killed by vampires over the course of seven years, Steve.
