(no subject)

Guppy and Hannibal spent a fair amount of time working on Sunshine yesterday, and she is currently resting in one of the beds.

She could probably do with some gentle company.

Autor nearly pulls a muscle in his neck in the way he jerks his eyes to her--and blinds himself. He slams them shut and sees halos.

"Ssh," he whispers. "Go back to sleep. It's good for you."

"...Autor?" she asks, because though the light is as lovely and warm as a fuzzy blanket, she's curious now.

"...How did you manage this?" She's not surprised that, if anyone did, it was him.

Well, she's not falling asleep now. He may as well brave the sun to find Rae within it. Holding out a hand, and shielding his eyes with the other, he tries to feel his way to her bedside.

"I knew there was a spell to do it, so I looked until I found it," he says, as his vision steadily returns. The cocoon is still semi-blinding, though. "And then a friend of mine--Mia, she's quite lovely, you should meet her if you haven't--figured out how to hold the spell for me."

"Hey! Don't hurt your eyes," she says, reaching for his hand with her left hand. Rae would offer shielding of some sort, but her mind is too much a mess at the moment to try and clear it and summon up something.

The best she can do is holding up a magazine (Professional Baker's Quarterly) between his eyes and the majority of the lights.

"I've met Mia. She sometimes buys my cinnamon rolls."

He plucks the magazine from her and carefully pushes her hand down before shielding his eyes.

"Thanks," he says, unconsciously slipping into the tone of one who clucks. "I think you two would get along quite well. And I am all out of those, by the way, so hurry up and heal."

She'd laugh, normally, but that hurts to do and is likely to make her cough, so she settles for smiling. "I'm doing my very best, I promise."

"And you're helping. What are these, anyway? Some sort of magic? They feel like..." Yes, they feel like sunlight. She'd know.

"These are beams of sunlight trapped in glass. Come on, Rae, you can tell. You're not that addled, right?" he says, smirk fixed firmly in place, hopefully distracting her from that slight puffiness under his eyes.

"Lumos Solem: Light of the sun. These twenty will all last for... a little bit. A day or so, maybe? But those four," he says, and gestures to the ceiling, "should last a little bit longer, as they have a fuel source. I wish I could be more specific."

"Yeah, yeah, I could tell they were sunbeams trapped in glass. I was, obviously, asking what they were, specifically, smartass," she says with a drowsy smile. "Which you then answered. Non-specifically, and wishing you could be more specific."

Autor preens, straightening up from his hunch as color returns to his pale face. Sass is good. Sass is marvelous. He'd been bracing himself to find a woman mangled, lying eviscerated on the bed; to see her up and awake is just... 'Smartass' is just the compliment cherry on the sass sundae.

"Well, your highness, if there's any other way you'd like me to bend nature, I'll be a bit more methodical in taking notes during the process."

He could show her the charms book. But condescension is much more fun.

"Yeah, if I really wanted you to bend nature, I'd ask for you to stop being a smartass," she grins at him. Her mind might be fuzzy with painkillers and a healing concussion, but the bleary-eyed smile is true. "But I'd bet that'd be beyond your ability, huh?"

"Hmm, it might be. I don't know if I could capture my radiance in jars," he croons, "there's just too much of it, and it's too intense for most people to handle."

"I doubt there'd be much of a market for it, if we were able to capture all your smartassery - smartassishness? - in jars. They'd just sit around in stacks with heavily discounted prices, gathering dust and spare vocabulary," she smiles at him, amused and drowsy in the bright sunlight.

It's a good thing Autor can hear the contentment in her voice; he can see the smile, but his hearing has always been better than his eyesight.

"Oh, Rae," he says passionately, laying a hand on his breastbone. "I'm so glad you recognize how underappreciated I am. Clearly this needs changing."

"It's all down to the law of supply and demand, Autor," she reassures him, her eyes half-closed. "You supply too much, and the markets demand you stop. Maybe you can petition the government to subsidize you in not producing so much smartasssery. Your crops are just too good, apparently. You've flooded the smartass market."

Re: Sunshine awake / Autor

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2013-08-26 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you suggesting that I have a monopoly on smartassy production? You wound me, good lady, with your false accusations," he says, sitting down on the edge of the bed, "as clearly you've glutted the market as well. I have records; my pedantry demanded that I take notes--this time."

Re: Sunshine awake / Autor

[personal profile] sunbaked_baker 2013-08-26 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
"So! You think you've figured me out, eh? You have no idea. I glutted the market by making your own supply completely unnecessary," she smarms, all pretend smug business-savvy over her drowsy contentment. "By supplying smartassery as a free feature in all my other niche market productions, people wonder why pay for it at all? Why buy icing when the cake comes already-iced?"

...Okay, Sunshine is blinking, blearily. She may have lost track of what they were talking about.

Autor blinks at her in return. Until he snorts into a laughter which runs a gradient from a soft chuckling to a full-on cackle.

Still grinning, the boy removes his glasses and scrubs at his eyes with the heel of his hand. He leans back, hoping the sunlight shields him from her view, and that she can't smell the salt.

Sunshine's smile widens, her eyes mostly shut with sleepy amusement.

"What are you laughing at, smartass?" Her tone is fond, and would normally be accompanied by chuckling.

"You, of course, and the derailing of your train of thought," Autor says, patting her hand. "Though I must confess to a slight disappointment. The last time one of us was doped up, there were recitations of poetry."

"So flamboyantly fictitious, exaggeratedly economic bragging battles are not lofty enough for you?" Rae is smiling. She might be drowsy and contented on painkillers and sunlight, but she can still engage in aggressive alliteration like a pro.

Or at least, that's what she wants to convince him of.

"Oh, that is not even remotely right," Autor grouses. "I was looking for fruit in a milkshake and you're capable of conjuring compositions which conform to the contours of cadency."

A faint line appears between her brows.

".......Looking for fruit in a milkshake?" she asks, muzzily.

What even, Autor?

"Mil-oh! Er. No. Smoothies," he says, face warming not just from the heat of the sun jars. "I'd remember thinking it was a milkshake and looking for the sparkles in it, and forgetting there was fruit, and then remembering again, and, anyway, I'm glad you handle your meds better than I handled mine."

He doesn't quite flail. But Sunshine can probably feel him squirming if she can't see him.

Rae blinks at him, smiling in a vague and slightly lost manner.

"That's okay. I have no idea what you're talking about." And she's pretty okay with that.

"I'll let you in on a secret if you promise not to tell anyone," the boy says. He glances around furtively--straight into sunlight, which strips him of any claim to subtlety. "I don't know what I'm talking about most of the time, either."
