(no subject)

Guppy and Hannibal spent a fair amount of time working on Sunshine yesterday, and she is currently resting in one of the beds.

She could probably do with some gentle company.

"That's really kind, thank you," she replies, smiling. Those brownies smell delicious - the smell of chocolate is a blessed long way from the smell of blood. "Though I might have to lock them in a safe whenever I drift off, or else I might wake up to no brownies."

Joshua laughs. "Hey, there's always more where these came from. My mom was always good at brownies. Glad that they cheer you up at least a bit."

"Chocolate is one of the best things for cheering people up," the bakers speaks this truth with utter certainty and a drowsy smile.

It takes effort - she probably shouldn't be twisting like that - but slowly and gingerly Rae reaches over to take one of the freshly-made brownies for herself.

"Oh man," she says, after taking the first bite. "That's fantastic."

Joshua beams. "Good. Truth be told, this was my second try. I got baking powder and baking soda confused on my first one. I ended up giving them to one of my co-workers. He thought there were great." He has a sheepishface. "Couldn't give a baker something that bad."

"Heh," she laughs, very slightly. Extremely slightly. Sudden jolts to the ribcage like laughing are likely to irritate any healing injuries in the area. "You're most definitely not the first to make that switch-up, and very likely not the last. It took me quite a while to figure out the difference myself, when I was just starting out as a baker."

"Well, at least I got them right the second go-round." He pauses. "So, how're you doing? Um. Other than the obvious fact that you're in the infirmary."

"Healing, or so I'm told. There was some... uh... trouble, back home, and it kind of followed me here."

"The painkillers they have me on are kind of amazing," she says, "though they make it hard to focus."
damncompass: '...hey!' face (bitches be stealin' my antimatter!)

"Oh, dear. I'm sorry." Joshua winces, his expression concerned. "I hope that everything will be alright." A pause. "I get the painkillers, though. I broke my leg pretty badly a while back, and they had me on some... interesting things."

"Yeah, some of the dreams I've been getting have been.... odd," she commiserates. "But not bad, so."

An improvement!

"But I should be out of here soon..." She doesn't exactly want to spend more nights in a public space if she can help it.

"How have you been, lately?"

"Yeah, my dreams were really really odd." Mostly involving shiny gold nonsense. "I'm glad that you'll be able to go home. It's always unsettling when you're stuck somewhere that's not familiar."

He shrugs with a smile. "Not too bad, actually. We're going to be getting a new Agent at the Warehouse, so I've been up to my ears in personnel files."

"Not home, really. Not until I'm fully healed. There'd be too much to explain," she says, faintly wry. "Questions I don't want to answer."

"A new Agent? So you'll be interviewing, or has the selection already been made?"

"Well, somewhere better than a hospital wing, anyway. Awkward questions can be terrible. I get that. There's a reason I haven't talked to anyone from highschool or college in ages." He shrugs, then settles back in his chair.

"It's, well, choosing a Warehouse Agent is an interesting process. We have to find someone who'll work well with the people we have and our really specialized subject matter." He pauses, thoughtful for a moment. "There's not really an interview process per se, there's just... well, we watch people once we've narrowed it down to a small number of people."

His understanding, or lack, perhaps, makes her chuckle. Which may have been a mistake, because it's all she can do to keep the chuckle from transforming into a cough. Her ribcage and bruised lung don't need coughs right now.

"You watch potential candidates until you make a decision, and then, what, 'Surprise! You have a new job'?"

Joshua winces. "oooh, I need to stop being amusing. It's not so good for your bruises."

He pauses, but a grin crosses his face. "You're right, actually. One of my co-workers calls it the surprise transfers. Because we're such a secret organization to tell someone about the Warehouse, we have to know that they'll be good. We can't give someone a trial period. Once they're in, they're in."

".... Just so long as they have the option to decline the job offer," she says, raising an eyebrow at him.

"Otherwise you're just hijacking their lives."
