(no subject)

Guppy and Hannibal spent a fair amount of time working on Sunshine yesterday, and she is currently resting in one of the beds.

She could probably do with some gentle company.

"Jocundus says hello, but I didn't bring him with me."

From a pocket he pulls out a patched napkin and he spreads it out on the bed like a picnic blanket. Then he places the pie on it carefully. From another pocket he pulls a knife and fork.

"Here. I do hope it is good. It would be awful if the pie was bad considering what the poor rats had to deal with."

A fool in a kitchen is a dangerous thing.

"Give Jocundus all my best," she smiles, delighted at the impromptu picnic.

"Well, you can share in its badness or goodness, if you like," Rae says, smiling. "Would you like to have a piece of pie with me?"

Pie is a wonderful thing, but is always better when shared between friends.

"Certainly. It wouldn't be fair to make you eat something I made without sharing."

From a pocket he pulls out another fork.

"But you get first bite."

"I'm quaking in my boots," she assures him with a smile. It is a cheerful fib.

She's not wearing any boots, after all.

Nevertheless - bravely the baker-maiden takes a forkful of the pie, and puts it in her mouth.

The pie isn't that bad. It's a little over sweet, but definitely apple and cinnamon. The crust is almost flaky. The bottom is almost burnt.

The Fool looks at her intently, watching to see how she reacts.

She smiles as she chews. That's the thing about pie. It doesn't have to be perfect. More than most baked goods, pie picks up the intent with which it was made.

"Yum," she decides with a contented smile around her fork, making sure she gets the last sticky bits off the tines. "Tastes like autumn already on the way."

At that he smiles broadly. "I'm sure more than a few people wish that summer would linger on. But I like autumn better. That's when the harvests come in."

Rae offers him the pie so he can share in its autumnal tastiness.

"I like summer the best, it's true. The sun is strong and daylight lingers long into the evening. Summer's the time for peaches and nectarines, plums and melons. But autumn is for apples and pumpkins, squashes and sweet potatoes and warm foods for when the evenings get chilly."

Every season has its good foods.

"Of course you would like sunshine and summer," he says taking a bite of the pie. His eyes screw up tightly as he thinks about the flavor.

"It's not so bad."

"You should've seen my very first pie," she says, smiling slightly. "It was a mess. The filling bubbled over and stuck to the floor of the oven, where it burnt and I had to scrape it off later. The filling wasn't sweet enough, the bottom crust was practically still raw in the center, and the edges were nearly burned black."

Rae grins at him. "And it's still told in my family about how the first cinnamon rolls I ever baked turned into such solid little bricks that Charlie used them when he built the new wall for Mom's garden."

"Who knows? They're probably the base layer of bricks, set just under the surface of the soil there," she smiles.

A garden wall needs a solid foundation, after all.

"I would like to go and see," The Fool says thoughtfully as he takes another bite of pie.
