Guppy and Hannibal spent a fair amount of time working on Sunshine yesterday, and she is currently resting in one of the beds.
She could probably do with some gentle company.
She could probably do with some gentle company.
Re: Sunshine awake
"Holy shit. Sounds like you got into a fight with a steamroller."
A pause before he asks haltingly, as tactfully as he can,
"So it was-- was it-- vampires?"
Re: Sunshine awake
Re: Sunshine awake
He grimaces, unable to picture just how brutal a vampire attack might be, but all the more impressed that Sunshine survived it.
"And you killed 'em?"
Re: Sunshine awake
Rae's voice cracks and she quickly shuts her mouth, turning her head to look out the window.
Re: Sunshine awake
"Sorry, honey. I'll shut up now."
There are more important things to ask about.
"Since you're gonna be laid up for so long, is there anything I can get you? Food? Stuff to read? A laptop or something so you can watch movies? I'm really good at fetching things."
She should've seen him when he was a giant dog for Cubefall.
Re: Sunshine awake
"Books? Maybe some tea? They gave me a water bottle, but something with some taste would be nice - I haven't been sick to my stomach since this morning."
"I'm hoping they'll say it's okay for me to get out of the infirmary soon. Sleeping in a public space is... not really comfortable for me."
Anyone can walk in uninvited, you understand.
(ooc: Heading to bed! <333333 Will be around tomorrow! <3)
Re: Sunshine awake
"And yeah, I know what you mean, I kinda hate hospitals and never wanna stay longer than necessary. You should be okay here, though, I saw a doctor or somebody who looked like a doctor hanging around outside before, but he's probably on a break now."
Re: Sunshine awake
"I've never actually stayed overnight in a hospital before - I don't get sick, and up until now I've been really lucky about injuries. Staying in one place and not doing anything - that's what galls."
She doesn't exactly want to be left alone with her thoughts, at the moment.
Re: Sunshine awake
Having seen some of her scars, he's surprised that none of them have been the result of serious injuries.
"Wow, you really must be lucky. I guess you could say the same for me, given my job, 'cause I only ever had to stay overnight in a hospital, like-- once or twice, really, a couple times when I was younger just for smoke inhalation. But years ago, there was this fire in an apartment building, and I was carrying an unconscious guy-- he was drunk or high out of his mind-- down this flight of stairs. The stairs collapsed, and we fell straight through, right onto these metal spikes. They were like part of a railing or a fence or something. I caught one in my hip."
Pausing, he smirks. "I'd show you the scar, but if someone walked in, they'd get the wrong idea."
Re: Sunshine awake
Until then, they had both better stay safe.
"There've been a lot of scrapes, scratches, tears and bruises, but this is the first time anything has been outright broken. Thing is, though I've been lucky in this, too. Most people in my world who go up against vampires either live or die outright, with very few being seriously injured but surviving. Retired or invalided-out SOFs - there aren't many - usually go on to tend SOF's apple orchards."
Someone has to make sure the mistletoe stays happy.
Re: Sunshine awake
Tommy would also have to separate his scars into two categories: personal and professional.
"Apple orchards? Huh. I never thought that'd be part of a retirement plan. When you retire, I'm guessing you'll be using those apples to make a helluva lot of pies."
Re: Sunshine awake
"Not that I'd be eligible for SOF retirement anyway - I'm unofficial. I'm spared all the paperwork they have to do, but then, I also don't have any supporting documentation, either."
Re: Sunshine awake
You learn something new every day at Milliways.
"Well, unofficial or not, they better appreciate what you're doing for 'em, 'cause you are just going above and beyond."
He jerks his thumb toward the door.
"How 'bout I get you your tea and books?"
Re: Sunshine awake
And that's the way it's going to stay.
"Yes, please. Thank you so much, Tommy."
Re: Sunshine awake
He gives her a crooked grin.
"Be back in a sec."
From Bar he requests a thermos of tea and borrows a couple of books, including his favorite Mickey Mantle biography, and anything else she might recommend for Sunshine. Subsequently, a romance novel called The Firefighter and the Girl From the Coffee Shop appears.
"What-- no. I ain't giving this to Sunshine! Take this back."
Bar doesn't.
"C'mon, this ain't funny."
Bar thinks it is.
"I can't just leave this here, there's kids around!"
Bar remains adamant in her choice of reading material.
Tommy returns to Sunshine's room, looking as if he wants to stick his head down his jacket collar like a turtle. He hands the thermos over, and sets the stack of books on her bedside table. The cover on the topmost book is hard to ignore.
"Sorry. Bar picked it out and wouldn't take it back."
Re: Sunshine awake
"What in the world, Tommy?" she says, amused (but only half at the book - the other half of her amusement is for his obvious embarrassment), as she reaches for the offending book.
"The Firefighter and the Girl from the Coffee Shop," she reads with relish, only a little mockingly, before flipping it over. "This is sooo out of my preferred genres... oh gods."
It takes all her willpower not to crack up at the synopsis.
Re: Sunshine awake
"I have no idea why Bar gave that to me apart from the fact that somebody out there decided to write a book with two characters with incredibly specific jobs that just happen to be the same as ours. I mean, I don't-- I can't even-- that is just-- I should go burn it."
Re: Sunshine awake
Tragic, yes.
Terribly amused, Sunshine holds the book up and begins the read the blurb on the back of the book in a very dramatic tone of voice, complete with loving emphasis on words of particular drama (or salaciousness), and commentary. The baker may be injured, but that doesn't mean she has to have developed any shame.
"'When not busy serving customers' it's missing a comma there, 'the girls at the coffee shop have a pastime that they find particularly... stimulating; watching and flirting with the firefighters at the station across the street. Alyssa has had her eye on one particular hottie, Evan London, but to her frustration nothing beyond friendship seems to develop between them - until the night her apartment building goes up in flames!' So friendship blossoms into professional obligation? I think that's a step in the wrong direction, Alyssa. 'Upon rescuing her from certain death, he offers her a place to stay until she gets back on her feet.' Thaaat's not contrived at all, nope. 'Despite the tragedy' - another comma missing there - "Alyssa sees this as an opportunity to secure her hunky firefighter once and for all!'"
To Sunshine's credit, she makes it all the way through without dissolving into laughter. But just barely. There's a reason this isn't a genre she reads much of.
Re: Sunshine awake
"Jeez, how something like this ever got published, I'll never know. Like, it's probably full of inaccuracies about firefighting and sexual puns about his hose and engine and tools and whatever. Also? Not to spoil it or anything, but I bet the girl set her own apartment on fire just so the guy could come rescue her, 'cause that's way too much of a coincidence. If she got arrested for arson at the end, then maybe it's a story worth reading!"
Re: Sunshine awake
"...If the author could conquer their fear of commas." Who edited this?
Re: Sunshine awake
Self-consciously determining a safe spot on Sunshine that isn't bandaged or remotely injured, Tommy reaches over and gives her an encouraging pat on the knee.
"Well, I think I've provided you with enough entertainment for now. I should get going. Hopefully next time I see you, you'll be up and around, yeah?"
Re: Sunshine awake
Too much time to think, she doesn't say. Rae is pretty sure Tommy would understand.
Re: Sunshine awake
He gives her a wink and a crooked smile.
"I'll see ya, sweetie."
With one last pat to her knee, he leaves her to enjoy the romance novel.
