(no subject)

There is space in the infirmary tonight for people who did not decide to follow standard safety instructions when they went to the roller disco.

[ooc: Visiting post for Autor and anyone else wounded. If anyone needs Guppy please see the first aid in the original post.]

Well, if either of them are bleeding, it's Lesgle; although that might also be drinks. The lighting in there was very odd and neither of them are exactly used to neon. Joly is mostly suffering from a limp and Severe Fretting.

((ooc: Jane's asleep, so Legle's not saying anything much.:P))

A quick pass or two with one of Dr. McCoy's instruments confirms that Lesgle doesn't have a concussion or anything else dangerous; just a mild bruise forming.

Meanwhile Joly does, in fact, have a sprain -- fortunately not a terrible one. Simon dispenses cold-packs and analgesics, and advice to avoid putting too much strain on the leg for the next few days.

"... and please let me know, either of you," he finishes, "if you find the swelling getting worse, or if it hasn't gone down by the day after tomorrow."

Joly's not paying much attention to his leg, except when the scanning device is running over it. It hurts; he'll use a cane; but there's a thing that goes *bleep* happening here.

"Excuse me, what is that? How does it work?"

Bossuet has been looking distinctly sheepish, as well one might after showing up drunk at an infirmary with a bumped head, but Joly's question sparks a sudden grin from him. "And so our young hero discovered the science of the future, and was not heard of outside the infirmary for a week," he mock-narrates. (Quietly. He wouldn't want to interfere with an answer. Really--what is that, and how does it work?)

"It's called a medical tricorder," Simon tells him, "and it scans tissue to look for signs of injuries that aren't visible to the naked eye. It would be able to tell, for instance, if you had a broken bone instead of just a sprain. -- Would you like to see?"

"You can just know? Without needing to operate, or--? How? Does it just know what to do? --I mean, if you have the time to explain. I would very much like to know." Joly can wait. He's an adult. He may have to latch onto one of Bossuet's arms to keep from unthinkingly grabbing at the tricorder for a closer look, but he can do that.

"We're from the 1830s," Lesgle adds by way of explanation--and then sits up a little straighter, thinking. "In fact, a friend of ours--a contemporary--was asking one of the doctors here for information some time ago. Germ theory, cholera. His name is Enjolras; perhaps it was you he spoke to?"

At that Simon straightens in turn. "Yes -- did he reach you with it? That was a few months ago now."

Re: The Wonders of Medicine

Joly nods. "He did-- well, he gave it to Bossuet here, back when he was alive, and he got back to us, back when we were all alive...I mean, they did their best to pass it on. It was a couple years ago for us. Ah. In Paris while we were alive. I understand it has been just a few months here...? It was--"

It was frustrating, was what it was. To have, suddenly, little bits of information that needed a whole city to mobilize, and only a couple of students to convince the local medical community, and a handful of known troublemakers with them--

"It was very good to know, thank you.We couldn't use it...fully." He frowns. "That wasn't Enjolras or Bossuet's fault! They did very well for two people with no medical training at all. " It's important to have that in the clear, at least.

He sobers swiftly at while we were alive.

"I'm sorry to hear." Steadily. "And I understand completely -- it's not easy to spread medical knowledge through a population that doesn't already have some base to build on."

Joly smiles and shrugs it off. Their deaths were Grand and No Doubt Meaningful, but he's not the one to do that justice and there's more important matters here.

"We are, confusingly, fine, as you said yourself. And I am sure we at least made some difference-- maybe it will inspire more people to try the plans we outlined." He does have some hope on that, actually-- though he tries not to think too much about it. "But-- you were saying about the-- tricorder? Is it from your world?"

[personal profile] simon_doctor 2014-10-21 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
"It's not, actually; there's a Dr. McCoy here who comes from a world where medical science is considerably more advanced than in mine." Simon looks a touch rueful. "I can't explain the engineering behind it at all, I'm afraid -- but it works."

Re: The Wonders of Medicine

[personal profile] simon_doctor 2014-10-21 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
He finds himself smiling; Joly's enthusiasm is appealing. "A great deal more, yes; our medical technology isn't as advanced as Dr. McCoy's, but it might not look like a vast difference from your point in history...?"

Re: The Wonders of Medicine

Joly raises an eyebrow and laughs. "Between your time and ours, or yours and his? I'm sure either way- there's always something different. And there's probably things your world has that his forgot. I mean, I read that on our Earth people dismissed leeches for a while and then it turned out they really were the best for some things."

He's very proud of the leeches. Good for them.

"But this is your operating room? Or are you Doctor McCoy's student..?" Simon looks...well, their age. He could be a student.

"Not a student, no. I'm in charge of the infirmary here, along with Dr. Gupta, but a lot of other doctors use the space as well. On a volunteer basis. We do our best to keep track, to make sure no one's misusing it."

"Volunteer--? Can anyone - can I volunteer? I know I'm centuries behind, at least, but I do know how the human body goes together and I've done some work in my internship, if you need orderlies or anything, even just records, if I can watch things here and learn how they work--"

Joly stops himself with a laugh. "I have a lot of catching up to do, I know. But I'll keep out of the way of actual operations! Observation, I am practiced at."

He could probably make some effort to not sound eager. But it probably wouldn't work.

Let's not mince words: Simon is downright delighted by Joly's enthusiasm.

"If you want to volunteer as an assistant and observe, that should be all right I think? I'll talk to Dr. Gupta and see if he agrees."

"Excellent! Thank you! Is there anything I could read before then? If there's instructions for anything here, I could read them in our rooms" He turns to Bossuet with a grin and squeezes his shoulder as he remembers their current accommodations-- they can read in their rooms any time, with no fire hazard!

...Just the cherubs.

Bossuet's still being fairly subdued; Joly settles down a bit in response. "I should get us back to our rooms, I suppose. But when should I check back in with you? I could come by tomorrow morning?"

"Oh yes, thank you! Oh-- and yes. Yes I-- that's your painkillers? Yes, I probably should, then." He'd rather forgotten the leg for a moment, but it does actually hurt a good bit. "I'll go back to using a cane for a while too-- I know to stay off it."

...he knew he shouldn't dance on skates, too, really. But a cane is actually fun to use.

"You might try alternating hot and cold compresses, too," he says, "to help bring down the inflammation ... And do you want anything for pain?" This to Bossuet, whose silence might concern him if he didn't suspect that it's more a personality trait than a symptom.

"I believe I made it up to--and through--green, having started with red."

He grins, suddenly and wryly, at Simon. It's true, he's not usually this quiet. In the back of his mind he's reflecting on whether making a public spectacle of oneself at a party is really the same in Milliways as in Paris, where it at least made a political statement. But mostly he's just delighted that Joly is connecting with the infirmary. "I"m afraid I'm not so allegorical a representative of the Republic as our friend Enjolras."

He finds himself answering the grin, with matching wryness.

"In that case, I'd recommend you take a few doses with you for after the alcohol wears off. And drink a great deal of water before then; a blow to the head is quite bad enough without a hangover on top of it. Allegorical or otherwise."
