There is space in the infirmary tonight for people who did not decide to follow standard safety instructions when they went to the roller disco.

"Then Guppy patched us up and now we're resting. Autor, I think I've got a book here that you might like,"

If this doctor is going to try and only talk with Autor who panicked when he came in then William isn't going to help him.

"That sounds quite painful," Dr. Lecter says, his voice sounding sympathetic. "Can I get you two gentlemen a chess game, at least?"

Autor blinks, and turns to William. Chess does sound ridiculously appealing. "Oh? What book? And can you play chess? Would you want to, if you could?"

William has no idea why Autor is considering something from this man who terrified him when he came in. He stands up to walk over to Autor and show him the book,

"Its about the detectives of the London Metropolitan police."

"If your friend doesn't play chess," Dr. Lecter says, "then I'd offer myself for a game. Do you?"

He looks at William.

Hannibal would crush him in a chess game, Autor knows, but he almost leaps at the opportunity. Almost. He's a bit worried about William, and he recognizes that the other boy is trying to protect him.

"I think we might have to decline your offer," Autor says, trying to harden his voice to keep any reluctance out of it. He has no problem keeping a glare. "We're quite all right by ourselves, Dr. Lecter, thank you."

Then he turns to William. "Sounds neat. What's the title?"

William can hear some that reluctance and he wants to know how it fits in and this Lecter gone,

"Yes, we'll be fine for now. Thanks for visiting."

"I'll pop by later and see if you need anything," Dr. Lecter says, smiling at them both.

Then, he turns and leaves.

Autor's a little surprised that Dr. Lecter left so easily. He chalks that up to William--who he turns to now. "So... What was that title again?" he asks, clearly wanting to avoid the subject of what just happened.

He puts the book down next to Autor and sits on his bed,

"Why does he scare and if he scares you why were you considering playing chess with him?"

Autor can't avoid such a direct question. And he can't escape out the window, either. He's never confronted why he still wants to play chess with a man who terrifies him--and that thought scares him even more. He looks down and away from William.

"He frightens me because he's intelligent and manipulative," Autor says quietly, fisting his hands in the covers. "He gets into people's heads. And I suppose I... I want to... play chess with him because he's already in my head. Sometimes it's difficult remembering that I'm terrified."

"Don't do that. If you forget why you're terrified then you'll find yourself watching him destroy everything you care about,"

His father trusted Ben Wade too much and ended up dead. He knows its not that simple but Wade's that way, he uses his niceness to get what he wants.

"I'm aware," Autor says, frowning at his busted ankle. If he weren't stranded here, then Hannibal wouldn't have found him, and he wouldn't be having this conversation afterwards. He continues looking away. "Thank you for... trying to protect me."

"Then act like it cause I don't know what he does, but I don't want to be picking up the pieces of you someday. You're my friend and he wasn't nice,"

And he's going to keep on trying to protect Autor as he doesn't seem good at doing it himself.

"You won't be picking up pieces," Autor says, pinching the bridge of his nose. "He won't use violence here. That's not how he works."

To say nothing of emotional and psychological damage, but Autor's just going to ignore that for now. "Are you all right? That's the first time you've met him and he didn't manage to do anything to you now, right?

"I hope you're right. He acted like I wasn't here, which was rude, but other than that nothing. I've had other people treat me that way cause I was too young or too poor, it doesn't bother me that much,"

That's not completely true but it worried him how Autor was so fascinated by this man.

"Good," Autor says, tempted to smile at William's calling Dr. Lecter out on his rudeness. The boy doesn't. "Good. As long as you weren't hurt by him." He shakes his head. "So what was that book you were talking about again?"

"No, I wasn't and its beside you,"

Not long after they came in, William had asked a wait rat to pick up a stack of books and pulls another one to start reading as he's feeling tired.

"Ah, so it is," Autor says, picking up the book and cracking it open. "Good night, William."
