Ward Round

In cubicle 1 is Brand, who is not to be beaten up under any circumstances.

In cubicle 5 is Kate, currently unconscious and accompanied by Will.

In cubicle 9 is Doc, also currently unconscious.

In the office is Guppy, who will do terrible things to anyone who starts a fight.

Will needs to stretch his legs at some point and walks over to Brand's bed, giving him a tired and too old look,

"Are ye satisfied with yer work?"

"That we got back alive? Yes," the Amberite replied to weak and to tired. "I'm just glad I was able to get them back before that thing decided to bring the mountain down on us."

Then, pausing to swallow, Brand looked up at Will with fully green eyes. "That the thing used me to do all that stuff? No. Wished Kate had killed me before it got out then we'd both be gone."

"'fraid o'what would face ye if ye lived?"

Brand snorted then winced. "No because if I had died with the thing inside still it would be dead as well." Looking back at Will he studied the man carefully seeing him, really, for the very first time. "Then, of course, the things might never have gotten out of Kate or Josiah.."

It was a lose-lose situation.

"Aye, but ye put 'em in 'em so can keep playin' this game for a while? I'm too tired to 'urt ye as I wished since I'm still recoverin' from the war ye threw me into an Doc punchin' me. So tell me a truth."

The last sentence is bitten off, Will has faced torture at the hands of men he barely knew but he's tired and sick of Brand and wishes him dead and gone. Its hard to call up the energy to be angry enough to care about him. They'll talk and be done with it.

"Because I didn't do it. Will, I lived with the same thing they had for close to 500 years..it's not something that can so easily be tossed aside and the thing won over me." It wasn't something easy to admit but the Fount and being worn down by the demon had made him lose as much as it had done to Kate. "Trust me when I say if I could have had a hand in this none of it would have happened."

"Five 'undred bloody years an ye'll na take up a grain o'it? Then be done with ye an stay 'way from us!"

After a day of reclaiming his home -- yes, this strange afterlife is his home now, friends, cats, bath, forge, and tea -- from his long absence, Teja goes to the infirmary to see how his wounded friends are doing, if any have woken up, if they need his help, and what they would have to say.

Indeed, those in the infirmary now are just those they brought back; all that had ventured forth have returned largely unharmed.

Teja stands in the door to the ward, and looks around.

"Hey Teja." Guppy says quietly from the office door.

He looks exhausted, having been keeping an eye on three seriously ill patients and people wanting to kill each other.

"This is a zero tolerance on violence zone, if you're here to cut Brand's head off you'll have to wait until he's discharged."

"I do not plan to," Teja says. "The demon has left him; I do take him on faith unless and until his acts proclaim otherwise."

Pause.

"I now know that I did, briefly, meet the true Brand before. It all comes together now. So I will, for the time being, not use my axe on his neck."

Guppy nods. "Good. It's so difficult to get arterial blood out of the curtains. Can I get you a coffee?"

"I prefer tea," Teja says, almost amused. "Arterial blood -- are there different kinds of blood running in a man's body? Of course, I have seen enough blood spilled to know that blood will run differently, bright or dark, fast or slow, liquid or viscous -- but the science of your time has names for that, and ways of telling it apart?"

"Well it's the same blood just with different stuff in it." Guppy says, getting Teja a tea. "Arterial blood is full of oxygen, the stuff you breathe in the air. That's what makes it redder. The fact that it has just come from the heart makes it fast and splurty. It goes through your organs to give them food and air, then comes out the other side a different colour and a lot lower pressure. We call that venous blood because it runs in tubes called veins; arterial blood is carried in arteries, which are thicker to account for the pressure."

Not his best explanaton ever, but then again he has been up for more than forty eight hours. It's a new personal record.

Teja nods. His understanding of anatomy comes mostly from violently taking it apart; but he has done much of that, and the battlefield first-aid of his time, over the years.

He drinks his tea, with a grateful nod, unconcerned by the gory topic. "But are not those stronger vessels the air tubes that are found empty in a dead man?" he asks.

Well Teja may not see Brand as a friend in any sense of the word, but he is there, and awake or drifting between the two states, when he catches sight of the man coming inside. Green eyes without a trace of black study him carefully though he makes no word to speak. If he is like Will then, well, it may not be a conversation he is up to having just yet.

After the conversation with Guppy, Teja comes over to speak to Brand. He is prepared to give the man the benefit of doubt, if nothing else.

"Morning," Brand spoke once the man was within distance, still studying him just in case. Benefit of the doubt would be nice all things considered.

"Greetings, Brand of Amber," Teja says.

"We met before. By the lake. You were yourself, but briefly."

There is, in fact, more than the benefit of doubt -- Teja has met the true Brand, and now, with what he has seen in the Cavern, things add up.

Will gives him a nod, he's watching over Kate and will not leave her side.

His face has a tiredness and hardness to it that he rarely wears in Bar, but this chaos has brought the outlaw to Milliways.

Teja wanders over, quietly, after he's finished talking to Brand.

"Greetings, Will Scarlett," he says.

"Milord, I'm glad to see ye un'urt."

[ostro_goth]

"None of us were, in the end," Teja says. "Perhaps a few scratches from the skirmishes on the road, while we were searching and wandering."

His hand moves over Kate's hair,

"Oh aye, milord. Are ye well?"
