Curtis and Edgar, initial treatment and visiting hours

It's been a rough day for Curtis and Edgar. Fortunately, the Milliways infirmary is definitely set up to handle hypothermia and exposure.

"And the bird. Yes, yes we did."

Her smile is a little crooked.

"Is he a good friend of yours?"

Right. The dodo. Curtis snorts, faintly -- how could I forget?

"Nah," he says. "I've seen him around, but that's the only time we talked." A beat. "He doesn't seem like a bad guy though."

They had a lot in common, it seemed like. Even outside the superficial metal-limb thing.

"No, he doesn't," Ysalwen agrees.

"There are a lot of that kind here, actually. It's -- nice."

"Yeah." He manages a small, crooked smile. "Kinda weird. But nice."

Curtis won't ever be used to it, he thinks, but at least he can sort of accept it now: for the most part, people won't look at him and think Tail.

"You don't get a lot of that back home?"

"Moreso now than before. It's -- I'm an elf and a mage, and generally people -- "

How to put this?

"Um. Hate both of those? So."

Her mouth curls upward at one corner.

"Except I stopped a Blight -- which is a pretty terrible catastrophe -- so right now that's still winning out over the rest. We'll see how long it lasts."

Curtis's eyebrows rise. (Not too far. It's hard to do a lot when your face has gotten scraped raw by the wind and cold.)

"Hope you get at least a couple good months out of it," he says.

Despite himself, there's a wryness under his words: he knows damn well how the people up Front don't hand out more than the most temporary of respites.

"We're almost to year three, now, and people are still only trying to kill me once every six months or so."

Her mouth twists a little.

"That I'm aware of, at least. Anyway. Do you need anything? I have a few things that can deal with cold damage, if you want to try? But the medicine here is fairly good, so -- "
