Infirmary Thread for Auxin

Joly is immersed in a repair manual for one of the infirmary's cellular scanners, marveling at the practical application of the abstract concepts it relies on-- and otherwise totally unoccupied. The Infirmary isn't always the busiest place.

So it's good to see a visitor! Especially one moving under his own power. Joly smiles and moves towards the doorway.

Auxin looks a little embarrassed to be making his way in here. But mostly bruised and beat up.

"Hey." he says, when Joly approaches. "Are you the doctor?"

"Yes, that is, I'm one of the doctors who works here. Do come in. Here, you can have a seat on this table. Is this your first visit to the Infirmary, Monsieur--?" He'll ask for a name more directly if the man seems confused, but it'll be good to know if he's that confused, too.

He does look a bit confused, but that's mostly because he isn't sure what mon suer is. And a little because he got hit in the head a few times.

He sits on the table and does as he's told.

"Thanks. I'm Auxin Fiddyment. I got... beat up a bit."

That's clear enough! Joly's already turning on one of the scanners at the wall. "A case of fisticuffs?" Joly smiles a little at the joke, and because Auxin seems mostly all right. "Well, we can take care of that here, certainly. Was it just before you came into the Bar?"

"I'm being charged with treason." Auxin says. "Outside."

"Are you? Well, these things happen. Have you committed treason, then?" His voice is already entirely friendly, but he hurries to add "It's all right if you have, you know, I'm not here to enforce anyone's law, just to get you patched up."

Annnnd Joly's pretty well on the treason-committing side of things himself, depending on a how a person looks at it. But he's not going to say that until he knows what Auxin thinks of his own situation.

"Well, I stopped the Klatchans getting rounded up and jailed by warning them." Auxin says. "So I guess it's treason this week, but it wasn't last week. I'm hoping the war might end by tomorrow so I get off.

"They were going to charge another recruit who didn't do it, so I had to confess."

He takes his shirt off - he's pretty black and blue all over his chest and abdomen, with almost certainly a broken rib, and some open grazes.

"That's how treason usually goes.-- Old hand at these sort of visits, are you?" Joly's a little amused, but glad to see the evidently full range of mobility. -- There, that doesn't look too bad. I'm going to get those cuts cleaned up and then I'm going to scan those ribs, all right?" As he starts working, he adds "Recruits-- were you drafted into the army for this war?"

"I'm in the Watch, it's like the police, but the commander and the captain have gone to fight the war, because they wouldn't round up the Klatchans." Auxin says. "I've never been any sort of rebel before, but... next door is a Klatchan family and Alik, he's my... my best friend really, and I couldn't bear the idea of them all having to leave, so I was going to just warn him and it got a bit out of hand."

Joly beams at him. "I always thought any real police force would work to keep the innocent safe. It sounds like you did your true duty." Joly knows there are good policemen, there are some good people in any group large enough, but he's known far too few. Auxin's force sounds like something else entirely.

He presses at the obvious injury site and nods to himself at Auxin's wince before pulling a scanner over. "This is going to sort of have a look at your ribs without needing any surgery, all right? " As the scan starts, Joly adds "Your commander sounds like a good man." It's no formal praise; Joly's intrigued and a little envious about such a commander of the guard, from Auxin's description. "What city do you all serve?"

He smiles back weakly. It felt like that at the time, before he got caught.

"Ankh-Morpork. And he is, and the Captain too. There's talk that they're on their way back, so I'm hoping to get rescued."

"I'm hope you'll see them soon, on your side of the Door-- and I'm sure we can have you get rescued well and whole, then." He nods, satisfied with the scans. "You've got a bit of a broken rib, but we can mend that, if you can be patient with me for a few minutes, here."

"Thanks. I never realised they could do things like that here."

"Oh, yes! It's an amazing place for medicine, really. Here, rest your arm on this--right, now just hold still for a few minutes." Joly sets the bone-mender in place and lets it start its work. "-- It's a wonderful device. But all the same, I'd like to keep you here tonight for observation--or at least for you to stay here in Milliways for a few days to rest, if you can. Healed bones can always use a little time to strengthen, and ribs bear watching." Which is why Joly's a little distracted from his usual full-force fretting right now, his attention on the machine and its work.

"Thanks, that's kind of you. How much would it cost?" Auxin asks anxiously. "For room and board I mean?"

He's not entirely sure how long he'll be in jail...

...Joly could kick himself for forgetting. Of course people will worry about that. "As far as I know, treatment here costs nothing, including if you stay overnight; no one has ever mentioned a bill to me." He certainly hopes they would. Hmm. He'll need to see about that. "As for room and board, I know people carry tabs here for quite a while, sometimes. And Bar will usually let you work it off tending Happy Hour or such over time, if she calls it in." He makes a rueful face. "I'm afraid I don't really know what it's like for patrons who come and go, you see. I'm here permanently. I do work here as a way to balance my own accounts; some of my friends find jobs, too. But truly, I think Madame Bar won't ask you for anything you can't well give."

Auxin nods.

"Thanks. I'll rest here a bit and pay her back." he says. "Somehow. Thanks so much for your help Joly."

Joly smiles. "Thank you for letting me do my job!" --Serioulsy, Auxin, thanks for being a good patient. Let me just get you a few painkillers, and I think you'll be set for now. But let me know if you need anything else while you're here."

Auxin smiles back. Joly is so kind, he'll have to seek him out when he's feeling better and thank him properly.

"I will, cheers Joly."

This bed is amazingly soft and squishy, and not full of straw.
