In the infirmary, there is a mini staff meeting going on. As in a meeting involving the miniature members of staff anyway.

"So this cupboard needs restocking." Guppy says. "... Work Experience, is that a tiny iPod you're listening to while I'm talking to you?"



Aesclepius, the other Infirmary Waitrat, tuts at his partner in crime and pulls off the weeny headphones.

Alex carefully tilts his head around to confirm that he is, in fact, seeing a rat with a tiny iPod. He's not sure how he feels about this.

"Did you... give me painkillers while I wasn't paying attention?"

Guppy confiscates the tiny iPod and comes over to Alex.

"Not yet, can I help you?" he asks, looking him over.

"That was a rat with an iPod, wasn't it? I'm not just seeing things?"

"Oh yes. He's called Work Experience, don't mind him." Guppy says, perching on the edge of the bed. "How are you feeling?"

Alex is feeling slightly caught on something. "He's called Work Experience? Not having it?"

"Yes, we tried to get him to change, but he said he likes being called that." Guppy says. "He was having it but now he's more like a health care assistant. Aesclepius, our other waitrat, needed a helping paw sometimes."

Something in his brain skips again at helping paw.

"Right. I suppose that makes about as much sense as anything here."

"How are you feeling?" Guppy asks again, trying to get him to focus on the matter in hand.

"I'm all right."

If a bit distracted, still, by the Work Experience Rat. Also, he was feeding that line to people when he was openly bleeding, so.

Enzo returns to see how his patient is doing. Hopefully better for some rest.

Enzo gets a smile for (a) being more or less the first person at Milliways Alex has seen more than twice, even if they never got around to introductions, and (b) rescuing him from his boredom. He was starting to wonder if he could borrow the rat's iPod. "Still alive."

"Glad to hear it. Head stopped leaking?"

The smile turns wry. "All plugged up."

"Not full of wood anymore?"

"Wood-free."

It's a definite improvement all around.

Enzo nods approvingly.

"You got a name?"

They never did get around to that, did they? "It's Alex. Alex Rider."

"Man," Steph says, picking her way over to his bed, "I haven't been in here in forever. And usually I'm the one bleeding all over the bedlinen. This is new and interesting!"

Beat.

"For me. Er, probably not for you. Sorry."

"Well," Alex says, "I saw a rat called Work Experience with a tiny iPod."

That was fairly new and interesting. And he offers Steph a smile, because he's enjoying having visitors. They make him feel less bored out of his mind.

"... the rats have iPods now?"

Steph helps herself to a seat by the bed and props her feet up on his bedside table. Man, she remembers this place. They've repainted the ceiling since she last stared at it for hours.

"I want one. A rat-sized iPod, I mean. Not necessarily a rat, I feel like it'd be kind of awkward explaining to Bar why I had a waitrat in my backpack. ... Why are you in here?"

"It might be hard to work," Alex points out. "Since they're made for rat-sized paws and things."

And, um. Well. "Long story."

"I don't see you going anywhere in a hurry," Steph says brightly, looking him over.

Seriously: "That's only because I haven't finalized my escape plans."

Steph eyes him.

"It's not actually a prison."

He nods to her to come closer so he can impart Secret Knowledge. "I'm pretty sure the rats are waiting for me to stage a break-out so they can earn special helper points."
