Guppy is in the infirmary, tidying. It's amazing how many of those condoms were still lurking around.
He pauses to instruct Work Experience Waitrat on which of the gloves they need more of.

He sorts out Gene's wound with neat stitches. He's good at what he does, and there shouldn't be more than a tiny scar when it heals.
"You need to lay off the booze tonight as well. Same reason I gave him. Booze equals more bleeding, more swelling, more pain, longer recovery time."
He picks up the scanner. "Now, you've seen it on Travis so you know it doesn't hurt, so are you going to let me scan you and make sure you've got nothing nasty going on?"
no subject
But then Guppy picks up the scanner. He takes one look at it and something inside him twists; he shoots to his feet and without thinking, a single fist is raised in threat.
'I told you to keep it away from me. Try it an' you'll be findin' bits of your teeth on th' floor for the next week.'
no subject
"Knock it off, you pillock!" he says. "I was asking you if you'd let me, not forcing it on you. Now sit back down, or I'll call Belar back and watch with pleasure as he turns you into something fluffy and demeaning."
no subject
'We done?'
no subject
"JESUS, MAN. CALM THE FUCK DOWN, WOULD YOU?" he squawks.
no subject
"No, you need your knee strapping up. And I can give you some pain relief, if you promise not to drink tonight. Otherwise you're going to knacker your liver and believe it or not, you'll miss that when it's gone. I'm not keeping you in though; I don't imagine you'd stay and frankly, I'm not babysitting the two of you together in here all night. If you don't want a head scan, you get the head injuries leaflet and discharged."
He sets about strapping Gene's knee up, and gives him some crutches.
"Don't walk on it for at least five days." he says, hoping that this will make Gene obay for at least two or three.
no subject
Guppy gets an incredulous stare.
'You are jokin' me?!'
How the bloody hell is he supposed to stay off it for five days? Crutches? Not a bloody chance.
He gets up and tests the strapping by bending it, then lets the crutches dangle from his hand as he limps out, putting a fag between his lips.
'I'll see ya.'
It's directed at Guppy because Travis isn't really worth bothering about right now.

"WHAT A TWAT," he says. He doesn't care if Gene does hear him.
no subject
He goes back to Travis.
"What was all that about then?" he asks, perching on the end of the bed.
no subject
He sounds rather hopeful about this.
no subject
"You were warning me off him the other day. You go around picking fights with someone like that around here, sooner or later you'll get hurt properly."
no subject
He doesn't seem to care that this version of Gene had no idea about that whole sticky business until well after the fight had been broken up.

Sane logic apparently does not apply.

"IT'S NOT REALLY THE SAME THING, IS IT?" he asks.
no subject
"I'm not trying to have a go at you. I was more concerned."
Besides which, it was only a short time ago that he took Alex home; otherwise the toddler would have seen two adults he sort of looks up to fighting like idiots.

A few moments later, Nicholas cautiously peers in from the door, and when he sees Travis, he sighs and drags his hand down his face.
Well, at least Travis is conscious, which is a lot more than Nicholas had been expecting.
no subject
"Come in, Nicholas. He'll live."
no subject
"I'm not helping you this time," he declares simply.
"GOOD," Travis says. "I DON'T WANT YOU TO."
Nicholas, rather started at Travis sounding like some cockney cartoon duck, gives Guppy a questioning look.
no subject
"Belar." he says to Nicholas. "He needs to stay in for observation but he'll be able to go tomorrow."
no subject
He does nod slightly at the explanation, though.
"Make sure he stays," he says. "I'm not sure if it could be arranged, but I'd rather he not even go home until everything's properly healed."
This is not what Travis wanted to hear. "YOU DO NOT GET TO MAKE MY DECISIONS FOR ME," he spat.
"No, I rather think you lost your ability to make your own decisions when you attacked a superior officer," Nicholas said, trying desperately to keep his calm.
no subject
He's rapidly losing trust in anyone from the police.
"Look, Travis... do you really want to go out there and have everyone hear you quacking? Just stay here, have a kip and a free dinner, make sure you're not going to keel over in a few hours."
no subject
"Not to mention the investigation that would likely occur when Sergeant Clarke sees you like this," Nicholas says. "You cannot show up to the station looking like this."
Travis just ignores him.
no subject
He reverts to his all-purpose contingency plan.
"Let's calm down and have a cup of tea. Decaf for Nicholas, Travis, how do you take it?"
