There is much internal debate at the moment as to whether it is better to not feel anything yet sound like an imbicile, or to be able to talk, but feel like you have a hole in your gut big enough to keep a hankie in there.
Right now, for Mal, option A is winning. Too bad option B is reality.
He's sitting up, more or less. Making conversation. Might as well make good entertainment for folk.

Someone in a ragged black coat.
It might be a familiar someone.
"Mal."
Headtilt.
"Most of you is working right, I hope?"

"So Simon tells me. Wèi, Niao."
no subject
"It is not so bad a day, perhaps."
no subject
"Didn't say that."
Mal's shirtless, take THAT Joss Whedon, but his blanket covers the wound to the stomach which caused him to take up a bed in the infirmary in the first place.

"You are breathing, yes?"

"Mal, tell me, is it just your special talent t'constantly need medical attention, or do you actually try at it? Who'd y'piss of this time?" Yes, she has already reached the conclusion that this was not an accident.
No one is that accident-prone.

"Hi to you too, Dorothy," Mal says weakly, and without any humor at all.
no subject
"Wot, am I next on the list? 'Cause y'makin' a decent..." She starts, growling.

Sallie hadn't seen what was wrong with Mal at first, and only just now caught sight of the sterile bandage covering a part of Mal's stomach on the left.
"Oh honey."

no subject
"Jack? Wei - what's goin' on?"
Mal covers up a bit, but not overly. Too much effort.

He manages a wry smile, though the faint worry lines on his forehead don't disappear. "You really should leave the death-defying antics to the ex-federal agents in the bar."

He looks scared.
