(no subject)

Hank leads Naraht into the main area and off into a small curtained area. There is much beeping and quiet noises from copmputers and other equipment.

He gestures for Naraht to stop, and then starts bringing in scanning devices. He quickly modifies an extra infrared scanner into a screen she can read and starts typing.

If you can stay still, I will start the tests. If you feel any discomfort, let me know.

Well, being scanned is nothing new for Naraht. The Horta being the newest race in the Federation's medical banks, he's played subject a hell of a lot.

He holds carefully still.

How is Peter doing? he writes. After all, he'd seen an awfully familiar energy pattern in one of the cubicals they passed.

Naraht forcibly unclenches hir macro-cillia. The Horta's no doctor, but it's easy to see that most of the tests appear to be within nomal perameters. Except one...

And the verdict is?

Naraht shivers again.

Well, since this is something that has never been known to occur in Horta, I suppose it's not suprising that the instruments can't see a cause. It's okay, Hank. I guess the next step is to get someone who can check me out on the mystical side involved.

Is there anything to indicate how bad it might get?

All sense? Even non-vocal communication?

Naraht's generation is the first to use something other than telepathy to communicate. But hir has used it since not long after hatching. After all, it's hard to work with human miners if you can't talk to them. The thought of losing that is chilling.

The thought of losing the other is the stuff of nightmares.

Naraht sighs as well and reaches up to clasp Hank's hand.

Well, at least I'm prepared.

A bald-faced lie, of course.

What next?

Will do. And, if anything changes, you'll be the first to know.

Naraht tries to look jaunty and confident.

If there's nothing else right, I'm heading back out to the Bar for some graphite. I need it. That is, unless you think I shouldn't. You're the doctor, after all.

Okay. Easy on the graphite. Heavy on the granite and be sure to take my quartz.

Hir hugs Hank back as best hir can.
